At Family Planning Associates we offer free urine pregnancy testing. You can walk in anytime during our regular business hours to request a pregnancy test. Results are available within 10 minutes on most days.
If you think you may be pregnant, taking a pregnancy test as soon as the first day of your missed period can help you get the care and support you need.
FPA offers free Early Pregnancy Testing (EPT) to our patients. This is a sensitive test capable of detecting pregnancy hormone sometimes as soon as 10 days after conception. You may get more accurate results if you
wait until after the first day of your missed period. This is because the amount of the pregnancy hormone, called human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, in your urine doubles every 48 hours. The earlier you take the test, the harder it is for the test to detect the hCG. Pregnancy tests are made to detect human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in the urine of a pregnant woman.
FPA does not routinely perform blood tests (or beta-HCG tests) to diagnose pregnancy. If you would prefer to have a quantitative blood pregnancy test we recommend that you see your primary care physician or visit an ‘urgent care’ medical office.
A first morning urine specimen is preferred for pregnancy testing because the pregnancy hormone is more concentrated at that time. Pregnancy tests cannot be used alone as a diagnosis of pregnancy because false positive and false negative results can occur. False readings can be caused if the urine is too diluted, if the pregnancy is very early, or if the pregnancy is ectopic (outside the uterus). A pelvic exam and ultrasound are required to confirm pregnancy, as well as the location and gestation of the pregnancy.
Most medicines should not affect the results of a early pregnancy test. This includes over-the-counter and prescription medicines such as birth control pills and antibiotics. Also, alcohol and illegal drugs do not affect pregnancy test results.
We are happy to provide confirmation of a positive pregnancy test for your records, at your request.
